"A
small sketch or photo suggests an idea for a series of work. I work on
several pieces at once over a number of days or weeks.
I use acrylic paints as I find them to be the most versatile and quick
drying which suits my methods of working. I don't often use a palette,
rather just old yoghurt pots filled with washes of pure colour, which I
allow to mix on the painting surface. Alternatively, I achieve the
colour I want by successive glazes. I like big brushes as they help to
keep the painting fresh and fluid."
Each painting becomes an
exploration of composition, colour, surface, texture and line...
"I usually sit on the floor
with the papers or canvasses surrounding me. The images are built up
slowly through the layering of paint, often adding collage or mediums
to create the necessary texture and surface. Drawing is added with
pastels or charcoal, paint may be scratched into or scrubbed off as
each piece develops.
Each painting becomes an exploration of composition, colour, surface,
texture and line."
